WAKE UP, AND STAND UP
Our suicide rate is of huge concern to New Zealanders. The Rainy Days Prevention of Suicide Trust has
been developed following the passing of Sonia Waititi, at the age of 21 years. Please note that the Trustees wish to clearly
emphasize the word “prevention” as the stronghold word in the title of this Trust. This is a non-profit charitable Trust,
with donations $5.00 and over being tax deductible. The single CD “Even Though Ur Gone (The Rainy Days)” has been written
and produced by Kapabal, Mak Neo, Turei, Olivia-Rose and Kayla in loving memory of Sonia. Aaron aka Kapabal is an
accomplished musician, who has successfully released his first album “The Abal One”. The single “Even Though Ur Gone” is a
track on Kapabal’s up and coming second album, “ Before Now”.
The launch of the Trust was held on 28th October 2006 at the Masonic Centre in Trentham, Upper Hutt which drew a healthy
crowd of people. Many copies of the CDs were sold on the night following a wonderful performance by the crew. The speakers;
Lynda Wyatt, Anita Watene and Sue Nicholson (star of “Sensing Murders”) delivered enthralling presentations which opened
interactive discussions among the crowd. Candles were lit by many in memory of their loved ones. An atmosphere of warmth and
caring permeated among the crowd with many expressing their appreciation for the song and for the future of the Trust.
Monies from the sale of the CDs are to go to proactively developing, and taking out into our community, an alternative
educational programme to help today’s youth and their families, and to offer support where needed. It is difficult to
identify youth and families ‘at risk’, so let’s take it out there to universities, colleges, youth groups, and maraes as an
overall programme.
It is proposed that the development of an alternative educational programme will address many of the issues that, in
particular, our youth are grappling with today. For example:
-
Peer pressure
-
Pressure to conform and perform
-
Relationship issues
-
Coping with stress
-
Identifying symptoms of depression and when to seek help
-
Building self-esteem and confidence
-
Empowering youth to reach their full potentials
Lynda Wyatt (sole trader of Hummingbird Natural Health) has developed a personal development/empowerment
workshop called “Your Body Talks, Learn to Listen”. It is anticipated that this workshop will be the core to developing and
building an educational programme. It is anticipated, that the Trust pool resources from natural health therapies and
exercises to develop an all encompassing programme, and to set it in motion. An interactive part of this programme will
include live performances from Kapabal, Mak Neo, Turei, Olivia-Rose and Kayla followed by open discussion with student
groups. What better way to get a message across, than through music!
Action currently underway:
-
Single CD “Even Though Ur Gone (The Rainy Days)” is being forwarded to radio stations throughout New Zealand requesting airplay.
-
Single CD being distributed throughout music stores
-
Approach outlets for the sale of the CD, for example, universities, colleges, mental health centres, youth centres, work and income, child youth and family, youth organisations, natural health stores, natural health practitioners, counselling centres and libraries.
